Workshop: “Doing Spatial History” with K S Madhavan (Calicut) and Susanne Rau (Erfurt)

On 17 and 18 March 2022, a workshop on “Doing Spatial History” will take place in the Audio Visual Theatre of Farook College, Kozhikode, India. The workshop is a result of the collaboration between the PG & Research Department of Farook College and the KFG “Religion and Urbanity: Reciprocal Formations” of the Max Weber Centre, Erfurt, Germany. The days consist of discussion sessions, talks and presentations.

The main aim of the workshop is to introduce and prepare a book project on the history of Calicut that focuses on the late Middle Ages and early modern period. During this time, Calicut was a kind of “global hub”, where people from all over the world and with many different religious backgrounds came together. The book argues that the economic success of the town was also linked to this religious diversity, a theme that connects directly to the research of the KFG.

Here are some impressions from the workshop:

The University of Erfurt and Farook College have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding as a result of the ongoing cooperation between the KFG and the History Department of Farook College. This MoU will be officially handed over as part of the workhsop. The workshop also marks the return to in-person exchange and collaboration, after two years of the pandemic.
